All tasks require a soft date (aka “loose goal date”) to be properly scheduled and processed, except for Someday/Maybe tasks. Choose this date intuitively—your first impression of when you might want to do it, based on what you know right now. The soft date is a “may do” date, not a “must do” date.

Don’t analyze your task list to choose this date, and don’t go back and change it if it passes. This is NOT a real date—it is a sneaky way to balance urgency and priority in a simple question that you can answer in 2 seconds. (This replaces the Covey urgent/important matrix, which is a nice concept but hard to wrap your mind around.)
